What it is used for

This combination is used to control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, together with diet and exercise. It is prescribed when metformin alone does not control sugar well enough, or to replace separate sitagliptin and metformin tablets with one. It can be used with some other diabetes medicines, including insulin. It is not for type 1 diabetes.

How it works

Sitagliptin boosts natural gut hormones that help the pancreas release insulin after meals and reduce the sugar the liver makes. Metformin lowers the amount of sugar the liver releases and helps the body respond better to insulin.

Stomach upset, diarrhoea, nausea and a metallic taste are common, mainly from metformin, and often ease over time. Headache and cold-like symptoms can occur with sitagliptin. Long-term metformin use can lower vitamin B12 levels.
