Metformin is used to treat type 2 diabetes, together with a healthy diet and regular exercise. It can be used on its own or with other diabetes medicines, including insulin. How it works
Metformin lowers blood sugar mainly by reducing the amount of sugar the liver releases into the blood. It also helps the body respond better to its own insulin.

Common side effects
The most common side effects are nausea, diarrhoea, stomach pain, loss of appetite and a metallic taste. These usually settle after the first few weeks and are less likely if it is taken with meals. Long-term use can lower vitamin B12 levels.

Warnings
- Rarely, metformin can cause lactic acidosis, a serious build-up of acid in the blood. Get urgent help if you have vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, fast breathing, or feel very cold, weak or drowsy.
- If you become dehydrated from vomiting, diarrhoea or fever, contact your doctor, who may advise pausing it for a short time.
- Avoid heavy drinking and binge drinking, which increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
- On its own, metformin rarely causes low blood sugar, but it can when combined with sulfonylureas such as gliclazide, or with insulin.
