What it is used for

Glimepiride is used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, together with diet and exercise. It can be used alone or with other diabetes medicines such as metformin or insulin. It is not used for type 1 diabetes.

How it works

Glimepiride stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, which lowers blood sugar. Because it works whether or not you have eaten, it can make blood sugar go too low if meals are missed.

Common side effects

The most important side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), which can cause shaking, sweating, hunger, a fast heartbeat and confusion. Some people gain weight, or get nausea, stomach upset or dizziness.

  • Do not skip meals, and be careful with alcohol, which increases the risk of low blood sugar.
