What it is used for

Linagliptin is used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes, together with diet and exercise. It can be used on its own or with other diabetes medicines such as metformin, a sulfonylurea or insulin. It is not used for type 1 diabetes or for diabetic ketoacidosis.

How it works

Linagliptin blocks an enzyme called DPP-4, which raises the level of gut hormones (incretins) after a meal. These hormones help the pancreas release more insulin when blood sugar is high and reduce the sugar released by the liver.

Common side effects

Most people tolerate linagliptin well. Some get a blocked or runny nose, sore throat or cough. On its own it rarely causes low blood sugar, but this becomes more likely when it is taken with a sulfonylurea or insulin.

  • People who have had pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • People who also take a sulfonylurea such as glimepiride or gliclazide, or insulin

  • Anyone who has had skin blistering or a serious reaction to another gliptin

Warnings

  • Seek urgent medical help for severe, lasting stomach pain that may spread to the back, with or without vomiting, as this can be a sign of pancreatitis.
  • If you also take a sulfonylurea or insulin, learn the signs of low blood sugar, such as shaking, sweating, hunger and confusion, and how to treat it.
  • Tell your doctor about blisters on the skin or severe joint pain.
  • Stop and seek emergency help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, or difficulty breathing.
