What it is used for

Gliclazide is used to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes when diet, exercise and weight loss alone are not enough. It can be used on its own or with other diabetes medicines such as metformin, and sometimes with insulin. It is not used for type 1 diabetes.

How it works

Gliclazide stimulates the pancreas to release more insulin, the hormone that moves sugar from the blood into the body's cells. It only works if the pancreas can still make some insulin.

Common side effects

The most important side effect is low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia), especially if meals are missed. Other side effects include stomach upset, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation, and some people gain weight.

  • Older adults, who are more likely to have low blood sugar
  • People with G6PD deficiency, as it can cause breakdown of red blood cells
