What it is used for

Empagliflozin is used with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. In people with type 2 diabetes and heart disease, it also lowers the risk of dying from heart problems. It is also used to treat heart failure and long-term kidney disease, whether or not the person has diabetes. It is not used for type 1 diabetes.

How it works

Empagliflozin blocks a protein in the kidneys called SGLT2, which normally takes sugar back into the blood. As a result, extra sugar leaves the body in the urine, and the medicine also has effects on salt and fluid that help the heart and kidneys.

Common side effects

Common side effects include genital yeast infections (thrush), urinary infections, passing more urine and feeling thirsty. Low blood sugar is uncommon on its own but more likely when it is used with insulin or sulfonylureas such as gliclazide.

Warnings

Rarely, it can cause ketoacidosis, even when blood sugar is not very high. Get urgent help for nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fast breathing or unusual tiredness.
A rare but serious infection of the genital area can occur. Seek urgent help for pain, redness or swelling of the genitals or the area behind them, with fever or feeling unwell.
If you are unwell with vomiting or diarrhoea, or cannot eat or drink, contact your doctor, who may advise pausing it for a while.
Drink enough fluids, and keep the genital area clean to lower the risk of infection.

Why does empagliflozin put sugar in my urine?

That is how it works: it makes the kidneys pass extra sugar out in the urine. A urine test will show glucose while you take it, which is expected.

Can people without diabetes take empagliflozin?

Yes, doctors prescribe it for heart failure and long-term kidney disease even in people without diabetes. It should be taken only when a doctor prescribes it.
