What it is used for

Ramipril is used to treat high blood pressure and heart failure. It is also used after a heart attack, and to lower the risk of heart attack and stroke in people at high risk, such as those with heart disease, or diabetes with other risk factors. Doctors also use it to help protect the kidneys in some people with kidney disease, especially when it is linked to diabetes.

How it works

Ramipril blocks an enzyme called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which the body uses to make a hormone that narrows blood vessels. With less of this hormone, blood vessels relax, blood pressure falls and the heart does not have to work as hard.

Common side effects

Common side effects include a dry, tickly cough, dizziness or light-headedness (especially at the start), headache and tiredness. Ramipril can also raise potassium levels and affect kidney function, which is why doctors check blood tests. Many people take it without problems.

Why does ramipril cause a cough?

ACE inhibitors can lead to a build-up of a substance called bradykinin in the airways, which causes a dry, persistent cough in some people. It is not harmful, but tell your doctor if it troubles you, as another medicine may suit you better.

What is the difference between ramipril and losartan?
