What it is used for

Bisoprolol is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent chest pain from angina. It is also used, together with other medicines, for stable heart failure, where it can help the heart work better over time. Doctors also use it to control a fast heart rate in atrial fibrillation.

How it works

Bisoprolol blocks the effect of adrenaline on the heart, which slows the heart rate and makes each beat less forceful. This lowers blood pressure and reduces how much oxygen the heart needs. It acts mainly on the heart, so it has less effect on the airways than some older beta-blockers.
