Loop diuretic (water tablet)

What it is used for

Furosemide is used to remove excess fluid (oedema) caused by heart failure, liver disease or kidney disease, which can cause swollen legs and breathlessness. It is also sometimes used to treat high blood pressure. The injection is used in hospital when fluid needs to be removed quickly, for example from the lungs.

How it works

Furosemide acts on a part of the kidney called the loop of Henle, stopping it from reabsorbing salt. Water follows the salt out of the body, so you pass more urine and fluid build-up goes down.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • Anyone with gout, diabetes, or difficulty passing urine, such as from an enlarged prostate
  • Older adults, who are more prone to dizziness, falls and dehydration
  • Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Anyone taking lithium, digoxin, NSAID painkillers, other blood pressure medicines, or certain antibiotics such as gentamicin

Warnings

  • Seek medical help if you have severe dizziness, confusion, extreme thirst, muscle cramps, weakness or an irregular heartbeat, which can be signs of dehydration or low salts.
  • Take extra care in hot weather or if you have vomiting or diarrhoea, as you can lose too much fluid; ask your doctor what to do.
  • Your doctor will check blood tests for kidney function and salts, especially when starting or changing treatment.
  • If you have heart failure, weigh yourself regularly and tell your doctor about sudden weight gain or worsening swelling.

Questions people ask

What time of day should I take furosemide?

Many people take it in the morning, because it makes you pass urine for several hours afterwards. Taking it late in the day can disturb sleep. Follow the timing your doctor gives you.

Why do I need blood tests while taking furosemide?
