What it is used for

Amlodipine is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), either alone or with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure reduces the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney damage. It is also used to prevent chest pain caused by angina, including angina caused by spasm of the heart's arteries.

How it works

Amlodipine blocks calcium from entering the muscle cells in the walls of blood vessels. This relaxes and widens the vessels, which lowers blood pressure and makes it easier for the heart to get the oxygen it needs.
