What it is used for
Losartan is used to treat high blood pressure, which lowers the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney problems. It is also used to protect the kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes who have protein in their urine, and for heart failure, usually when ACE inhibitors cause side effects. In people with high blood pressure and a thickened heart muscle, it can help reduce the risk of stroke.
How it works
Losartan blocks the effect of angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels and makes the body hold on to salt and water. As a result, blood vessels relax, blood pressure falls, and there is less strain on the heart and kidneys.

Most people tolerate losartan well. Possible side effects include dizziness, tiredness, light-headedness when standing up, and a raised potassium level in the blood. It is much less likely than ACE inhibitors to cause a dry cough.
