What it is used for

Atorvastatin lowers LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. It is used to reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke in people who already have heart or blood vessel disease, and in people at high risk, such as those with diabetes or several risk factors. It is also used for inherited high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolaemia), alongside a healthy diet.

How it works

Atorvastatin blocks HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme the liver uses to make cholesterol. The liver then removes more LDL cholesterol from the blood.

Common side effects include muscle and joint aches, headache, nausea, diarrhoea or constipation, and cold-like symptoms. Many people have no side effects at all. It can slightly raise blood sugar levels.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • People with liver disease or who drink a lot of alcohol
  • Women who are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, as statins should not be used then
  • People with kidney disease, an underactive thyroid, or a history of muscle problems

Warnings

  • Get medical help promptly for unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or dark urine. Rarely, statins cause serious muscle damage.
  • Fusidic acid tablets or injections must not be taken with atorvastatin, because together they can cause severe muscle damage; your doctor will pause the statin if you need fusidic acid.
  • Avoid drinking large amounts of grapefruit juice.
  • Cholesterol rises again when a statin is stopped, so talk to your doctor before stopping or changing it.
