What it is used for

Olmesartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It can be used on its own or with other blood pressure medicines. Lowering blood pressure over time reduces the chance of strokes, heart attacks and damage to the kidneys.

How it works

Olmesartan stops a hormone called angiotensin II from acting on blood vessels. Without this signal, the vessels relax and widen, so blood flows more easily and pressure falls.

Common side effects

Most people tolerate olmesartan well. Some notice dizziness, headache or tiredness, especially in the first weeks. It can raise potassium levels or affect kidney function in some people, which blood tests can pick up.
