What it is used for
Rabeprazole is used to treat acid reflux and heartburn (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), including inflammation of the food pipe caused by acid. It is also used to heal stomach and duodenal ulcers, and together with antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that causes ulcers. Doctors also use it for rare conditions in which the stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How it works
Rabeprazole switches off proton pumps, the tiny pumps in the stomach lining that release acid. This lowers the amount of acid in the stomach, relieving symptoms and allowing damaged tissue to heal.
