What it is used for
Esomeprazole lowers stomach acid. It is used for heartburn and acid reflux (GORD), to heal inflammation of the gullet caused by acid (reflux oesophagitis), and to treat and prevent stomach ulcers, including those caused by anti-inflammatory painkillers. It is used with antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori infection. The injection is used in hospital, for example after treatment of a bleeding ulcer.
How it works
Esomeprazole switches off the proton pumps in the stomach lining that release acid. It is the S-isomer of omeprazole, one of the two mirror-image forms that make up that medicine.

Common side effects include headache, stomach pain, diarrhoea, constipation, nausea and wind, and they are usually mild. As with other medicines of this type, long-term use has been linked to low magnesium and vitamin B12 levels, bone fractures and some gut infections.
