What it is used for
Lansoprazole is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or GORD) and to heal stomach and duodenal ulcers. It is combined with antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori, a stomach infection that causes ulcers. It is also used to protect the stomach in people who take NSAID painkillers, and for rare conditions with very high acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How it works
Lansoprazole switches off the proton pumps in the stomach lining, the final step the stomach uses to make acid. Less acid allows the food pipe and stomach lining to heal.
