What it is used for

Famotidine is used to treat heartburn, acid indigestion and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), and to heal stomach and duodenal ulcers. It is also used to help prevent ulcers coming back and for conditions with very high acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The injection is used in hospital when a person cannot take medicines by mouth.

How it works

Famotidine blocks histamine H2 receptors on the acid-making cells of the stomach. This reduces the amount of acid the stomach produces, day and night.
