What it is used for
Omeprazole reduces the amount of acid made in the stomach. It is used to treat heartburn and acid reflux (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, or GORD), and to heal and prevent stomach and duodenal ulcers. It is combined with antibiotics to clear Helicobacter pylori, a stomach infection that causes ulcers, and can protect the stomach in people who take anti-inflammatory painkillers. It is also used for rare conditions in which the stomach makes too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.
How it works
Omeprazole blocks the proton pump, the final step that cells in the stomach lining use to release acid. With less acid, the gullet and stomach lining can heal and symptoms ease.
