What it is used for
Pantoprazole lowers the amount of acid the stomach makes. It is used for acid reflux and heartburn, inflammation of the gullet caused by acid, and stomach and duodenal ulcers, and to protect the stomach in people who take anti-inflammatory painkillers. It is combined with antibiotics to treat Helicobacter pylori and is used for rare conditions with very high acid production. The injection is given in hospital when tablets cannot be taken.
How it works
Pantoprazole binds to and blocks the proton pump, the part of acid-producing stomach cells that pumps acid into the stomach. This keeps acid levels low for many hours.
