What it is used for
This combination is used to treat high blood pressure when a single medicine has not lowered it enough. Combining two medicines that work in different ways often controls blood pressure better. In people with high blood pressure and a thickened heart muscle, it can also help lower the risk of stroke.
How it works
Losartan blocks angiotensin II, a hormone that tightens blood vessels, so the vessels relax. Hydrochlorothiazide is a water tablet (diuretic) that helps the kidneys remove extra salt and water, which also lowers blood pressure.
