What it is used for

This combination is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) in adults. It is usually prescribed when blood pressure is not controlled by one medicine alone, or for people already taking both medicines who find a single tablet simpler. Keeping blood pressure under control lowers the risk of stroke, heart attack and kidney damage.

How it works

Amlodipine relaxes the muscle in blood vessel walls by blocking calcium from entering the muscle cells. Olmesartan blocks angiotensin II, a hormone that narrows blood vessels, so together they widen the vessels and lower blood pressure.

Common side effects

The most common side effect is swelling of the ankles or feet, mainly from amlodipine. Others include dizziness, headache, flushing and tiredness. Many of these ease as the body gets used to the medicine.
