What it is used for

Nitazoxanide is used to treat diarrhoea caused by the gut parasites Giardia (giardiasis) and Cryptosporidium (cryptosporidiosis). It is used in both adults and children, with a liquid form for children. Your doctor decides whether a parasite is the likely cause, as most diarrhoea is caused by viruses or bacteria.

How it works

Nitazoxanide blocks an enzyme that these parasites need to produce energy. Without it, the parasites cannot survive in the gut.
