What it is used for
Ondansetron is used to prevent and treat nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It is also used to prevent and treat sickness after surgery. Doctors sometimes use it for other causes of vomiting, such as a stomach bug in children, when they judge it helpful.
How it works
Ondansetron blocks the action of serotonin at 5-HT3 receptors in the gut and in the part of the brain that triggers vomiting. This reduces the signals that cause nausea and being sick.
