What it is used for

Zinc sulfate is given together with oral rehydration salts (ORS) to treat diarrhoea in children, as recommended by the World Health Organization. It helps diarrhoea end sooner, makes it less severe and lowers the chance of it coming back in the following months. It is also used to prevent and treat zinc deficiency, for example in people with a poor diet or conditions that affect absorption.

How it works

Zinc is a mineral the body needs for immunity, growth, wound healing and repair of the gut lining. Replacing zinc lost during diarrhoea helps the gut recover and fight infection.

Common side effects

Zinc is generally well tolerated. It can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach upset or a metallic taste. If a child vomits soon after taking it, ask a doctor or health worker whether to give it again.

  • People taking tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin, as zinc can reduce their absorption
  • People taking iron or calcium supplements, which can reduce zinc absorption
  • People with kidney disease
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women who want to take it as a supplement
  • Anyone planning to take it for a long time

Warnings

  • Zinc does not replace ORS. Keep giving ORS and fluids, and continue breastfeeding and feeding during diarrhoea.
  • Get urgent help if a child with diarrhoea has blood in the stool, is very sleepy or hard to wake, cannot drink, has sunken eyes, or passes very little urine.
  • Give it for the full number of days advised, even after the diarrhoea stops.
  • Do not take more than advised. Too much zinc over a long time can cause copper deficiency, which can affect the blood and nerves.

ORS replaces the water and salts lost in diarrhoea, which prevents dehydration. Zinc helps the gut lining heal and supports the immune system, so the diarrhoea tends to end sooner and is less likely to come back. The two work best together.
