What it is used for

Oral rehydration salts are used to prevent and treat dehydration caused by diarrhoea, including cholera, and by vomiting, in children and adults. The solution replaces the water and salts the body loses. It can also help replace fluid and salts lost through heavy sweating in hot weather.

How it works

ORS contains glucose and salts (sodium, potassium and chloride) in a balanced mix. The glucose helps the gut absorb sodium, and water follows it into the body much more effectively than plain water.

The salts and glucose work only in the right balance. Too little water makes the solution too salty, which can worsen dehydration; too much water makes it less effective. Packets differ, so always read the label.

Does ORS stop diarrhoea?

No. ORS replaces the fluid and salts lost in diarrhoea and prevents dangerous dehydration. The diarrhoea usually settles on its own with time.
