What it is used for
Albendazole treats infections with intestinal worms, such as roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and threadworm (pinworm). It is widely used in deworming programmes for children. Under specialist care, longer courses are used for tapeworm-related infections such as hydatid cysts and neurocysticercosis (tapeworm cysts in the brain).
How it works
Albendazole stops worms from taking up sugar (glucose), so they run out of energy and die. The dead worms are then passed out of the body in the stool.

Short courses for intestinal worms are usually well tolerated. Some people have stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, headache or dizziness. Long courses for tissue infections can affect the liver and blood counts, so doctors arrange blood tests.
