What it is used for
Metronidazole treats infections caused by certain bacteria and parasites. It is used for amoebic dysentery and amoebic liver abscess, giardiasis, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, and infections of the teeth, gums, abdomen and pelvis. It is also combined with other medicines to clear Helicobacter pylori and used to prevent infection around some operations. The vaginal gel is used for bacterial vaginosis.
How it works
Metronidazole enters bacteria and parasites that live without oxygen and damages their DNA, killing them. It does not work against viruses or most bacteria that need oxygen.

Common side effects include nausea, a metallic taste, loss of appetite, stomach upset and diarrhoea. Urine can turn darker or reddish-brown, which is harmless. Long courses can rarely cause tingling or numbness in the hands and feet.
