What it is used for
Ivermectin tablets treat certain parasitic worm infections, especially strongyloidiasis (an infection of the gut with the Strongyloides worm) and onchocerciasis (river blindness). They are also used for scabies, particularly severe crusted scabies or when creams have not worked. In some countries ivermectin is used in public health programmes against lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis).
How it works
Ivermectin binds to channels in the nerve and muscle cells of parasites, causing paralysis and death. People are much less affected because these channels differ in humans and the medicine does not easily enter the human brain.

Common side effects
Side effects are usually mild and short-lived, such as dizziness, nausea, diarrhoea, tiredness and itching. When many parasites die at once, the body can react with itching, rash, fever, swollen glands or joint pain.

Warnings
- Do not use ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19. Large studies did not show benefit, and the World Health Organization recommends it for this only within clinical trials.
- Take only the amount prescribed. Too much can cause confusion, drowsiness, seizures and coma.
- Never use ivermectin products made for animals.
- Get urgent help for confusion, severe dizziness, difficulty walking or a serious skin reaction.

Does ivermectin treat COVID-19?
No. Large clinical trials found that ivermectin did not help people recover from COVID-19. The World Health Organization advises using it for COVID-19 only in research studies.
Can ivermectin tablets treat scabies?
Yes, doctors sometimes prescribe ivermectin tablets for scabies, especially severe or widespread cases. Creams such as permethrin are also used, and close contacts in the household usually need treatment at the same time.
Does ivermectin treat all types of worms?
No. It works well against some worms, such as Strongyloides, but it is not the usual choice for common roundworm, hookworm or tapeworm. Albendazole is often used for those.
