What it is used for

Clindamycin is used to treat serious bacterial infections of the skin and soft tissues, bones and joints, teeth and gums, lungs, and the abdomen and pelvis (often with another antibiotic). It is useful for people who are allergic to penicillin. The injection is used in hospital for more severe infections.

Common side effects include diarrhoea, nausea, stomach pain and skin rash. The injection can cause a metallic taste or pain where it is given.

Warnings

  • Clindamycin is more likely than many antibiotics to cause a serious bowel infection. Seek medical help for severe, watery or bloody diarrhoea, during treatment or weeks later, and do not take anti-diarrhoea medicines without advice.
  • Swallow capsules with a full glass of water and stay upright for a while, to avoid irritation of the food pipe.
  • Seek urgent help for a blistering or peeling rash, swelling of the face or difficulty breathing.
  • Take clindamycin only when a doctor prescribes it, and complete the course as advised, even if you feel better sooner.
