What it is used for
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used for certain bacterial infections, including urinary tract and kidney infections, prostate infections, some types of infectious diarrhoea, and some bone, joint, skin and chest infections. Because of the risk of rare but serious side effects, doctors usually keep it for infections where other antibiotics are not suitable. Resistance to ciprofloxacin is common in Bangladesh for some infections, including typhoid, so your doctor will choose it with care.
How it works
Ciprofloxacin blocks enzymes that bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA, so the bacteria cannot multiply and die. It does not work against viruses.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, stomach upset, headache and dizziness. It can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Rarely, it can cause serious and long-lasting effects on the tendons, muscles, joints and nerves.

- People with diabetes, as it can cause high or low blood sugar
- Anyone who has an aortic aneurysm (a swollen main artery) or a family history of one
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and parents of children and teenagers
Warnings
- Stop taking it and contact your doctor straight away if you get tendon pain or swelling, muscle weakness, tingling or numbness, or unusual changes in mood or thinking.
- Get urgent help for sudden severe pain in the chest, belly or back, a fast or irregular heartbeat, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.
- Antacids, and supplements containing calcium, iron, magnesium or zinc, can stop it being absorbed. Ask your pharmacist how to space them.
- It can increase the effects of some medicines, such as theophylline and warfarin. Tell your doctor about everything you take.
- Take it only when a doctor prescribes it, and complete the course as advised.
