What it is used for
Fluconazole treats fungal and yeast infections. It is commonly used for vaginal thrush, thrush in the mouth or throat, and some fungal skin infections such as ringworm and pityriasis versicolor. Doctors also use it for deeper candida infections, cryptococcal meningitis, and to prevent fungal infections in people with a weak immune system.
How it works
Fluconazole blocks an enzyme that fungi need to make ergosterol, a key part of their cell membrane. Without it, the fungus cannot grow.
