What it is used for
Amoxicillin is an antibiotic used for bacterial infections such as chest infections (including pneumonia), ear, sinus and throat infections, dental abscesses, urinary tract infections and some skin infections. It is also used with other medicines to clear Helicobacter pylori, a stomach infection linked to ulcers. It comes in forms suitable for adults and children, including drops and suspension for babies.
How it works
Amoxicillin stops bacteria from forming their cell walls, which causes them to break apart and die. It has no effect on viruses such as colds and flu.
