Beta-blocker (heart and blood pressure medicine)
- 15 brands
- 13 makers
- 3 forms
- From ≈ ৳13
What it is used for
Metoprolol tartrate is used to treat high blood pressure and angina (chest pain caused by heart disease). It is also used after a heart attack, to control some fast or irregular heart rhythms, and to help prevent migraine. Doctors sometimes use it to ease symptoms such as a racing heart in an overactive thyroid. The injection is given in hospital for certain heart rhythm problems and heart attacks.
How it works
Metoprolol blocks the effect of adrenaline on beta-1 receptors, mainly in the heart. This slows the heart rate and reduces the force of each beat, which lowers blood pressure and the heart's need for oxygen.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

- Anyone with a slow heartbeat, heart block, very low blood pressure or heart failure that is not stable
- People with diabetes, as it can hide warning signs of low blood sugar such as a fast heartbeat
- People with poor circulation in the hands and feet, or a rare adrenal tumour called phaeochromocytoma
- Anyone on verapamil or diltiazem, medicines for heart rhythm, or other medicines that lower blood pressure
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with liver disease
Warnings
- Do not stop it suddenly, as this can make angina worse or trigger a heart attack. If it needs to be stopped, your doctor will lower it step by step.
- Get urgent help for wheezing or breathlessness, fainting, or a very slow heartbeat.
- Tell the doctor or dentist that you take a beta-blocker before surgery or an anaesthetic.
