What it is used for

Atenolol is used to treat high blood pressure and to prevent chest pain from angina. It is also used to control some types of irregular or fast heartbeat, and to protect the heart in the early period after a heart attack.

How it works

Atenolol blocks the effect of adrenaline on the heart, making it beat more slowly and with less force. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's need for oxygen. It is removed from the body mainly by the kidneys.
