What it is used for

This combination is used to remove extra fluid that builds up in the body (oedema). It is used for swelling caused by heart failure, fluid in the abdomen (ascites) from liver cirrhosis, and some kidney conditions such as nephrotic syndrome. Doctors use it especially when the swelling is linked to high levels of aldosterone, a hormone that makes the body hold on to salt and water.

How it works

Furosemide acts on the kidneys to make you pass more urine, clearing salt and water. Spironolactone blocks aldosterone and helps the body keep potassium, balancing the potassium that furosemide tends to wash out.

It makes you pass more urine, and it can cause thirst, dizziness when standing up, headache and stomach upset. Spironolactone can cause breast tenderness or swelling in men and period changes in women. It can also change potassium and sodium levels in the blood.
