What it is used for
Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic used mainly for infections caused by staphylococcus bacteria. These include skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscesses, impetigo, cellulitis and infected wounds or eczema, as well as some ear infections. The injection is used in hospital for more serious infections of the bones, joints, lungs, blood or heart valves.
How it works
Flucloxacillin stops bacteria from building their cell walls. Unlike some other penicillins, it is not broken down by penicillinase, an enzyme that many staphylococci make.
