What it is used for

This antibiotic combination treats a range of bacterial infections, including sinus and middle ear infections, chest infections and pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and skin and soft tissue infections such as infected animal or human bites. It is also used for some dental and bone infections. The injection is used in hospital for more serious infections.

How it works

Amoxicillin kills bacteria by damaging their cell walls. Clavulanic acid blocks enzymes (beta-lactamases) that some bacteria make to destroy amoxicillin, so the antibiotic works against more types of bacteria.

What is the difference between amoxicillin and co-amoxiclav?

Co-amoxiclav contains amoxicillin plus clavulanic acid. The clavulanic acid protects amoxicillin from bacteria that would otherwise destroy it, so the combination treats some infections that amoxicillin alone cannot.

Why does co-amoxiclav often cause diarrhoea?

The antibiotic also affects the normal bacteria in the gut, and clavulanic acid in particular can upset the bowel. Mild diarrhoea is common; seek help if it is severe and watery or contains blood.
