What it is used for
Cephradine is an antibiotic used for bacterial infections of the throat, tonsils, ears and chest, and for skin, soft tissue and urinary tract infections. The injection is used in hospital for more serious infections and to help prevent infection around surgery. It is available as capsules, and as a suspension or drops for children.
How it works
Cephradine stops bacteria from building a strong cell wall, which makes them burst and die. Like other antibiotics, it has no effect on viruses.

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhoea, stomach discomfort and skin rash. Some people get a yeast infection such as oral or vaginal thrush. Most people tolerate it well.

Is cephradine a penicillin?
No, cephradine is a cephalosporin. Cephalosporins are related to penicillins, and a small number of people who are allergic to penicillin also react to cephalosporins, so always tell your doctor about any antibiotic allergy.
What is the difference between cephradine and cefixime?
Both are cephalosporins. Cephradine is an older, first-generation type that works mainly against bacteria found on the skin and in the throat.
