What it is used for

Mupirocin ointment is used for bacterial skin infections such as impetigo, infected hair follicles (folliculitis) and small infected cuts or wounds. The nasal ointment is used to clear Staphylococcus aureus bacteria, including MRSA, from inside the nose, for example before surgery or to stop infection spreading in hospital.

How it works

Mupirocin blocks an enzyme that bacteria need to make proteins, which stops them from growing. It works mainly against staphylococcus and streptococcus bacteria, the common causes of skin infections.

It may cause burning, stinging, itching or redness where it is applied. The nasal form can cause a runny or irritated nose. Most people tolerate it well.

Warnings
