Etoricoxib

Etoricoxib is used to relieve pain and swelling in osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis (a long-term inflammation of the spine). It is also used for the pain and inflammation of an acute gout attack, and for short-term relief of moderate pain after dental surgery. Doctors may choose it when older anti-inflammatory painkillers have caused stomach problems.

How it works

Etoricoxib blocks an enzyme called COX-2, which the body uses to make prostaglandins that cause pain and swelling. Because it has little effect on COX-1, an enzyme that helps protect the stomach lining, it is less likely than older NSAIDs to cause stomach ulcers.

Common side effects

Common side effects include indigestion, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, dizziness, swelling of the legs and a rise in blood pressure. Most people tolerate short courses well, but the risk of serious side effects rises with higher amounts and longer use.
