Paracetamol

Paracetamol is used to relieve mild to moderate pain, such as headache, toothache, period pain, muscle aches and pain after minor procedures. It is also widely used to bring down a fever, including fever with colds, flu and dengue. It is often the first choice for pain and fever in children and adults.

How it works

Paracetamol is thought to work mainly in the brain, where it reduces the chemical signals that cause pain and raise body temperature. It has little effect on inflammation.

Common side effects

Most people have no side effects when paracetamol is used as directed. Rarely, it can cause a skin rash or other allergic reactions. Taking more than the recommended amount can cause serious liver damage, which may not cause symptoms at first.
