What it is used for

Low-dose aspirin is mainly used to help prevent heart attacks and strokes in people who have already had one, or who have heart disease, a coronary stent or certain types of stroke. It is often prescribed with clopidogrel after a heart attack or stent. Doctors may also recommend it in pregnancy for women at high risk of pre-eclampsia. At higher strengths, aspirin relieves pain, fever and inflammation.

How it works

Aspirin blocks an enzyme called cyclo-oxygenase. In platelets, this stops them from clumping together to form clots, an effect that lasts for the life of the platelet. At higher strengths it also reduces the chemicals that cause pain, fever and swelling.

Common side effects

Common side effects include indigestion, stomach irritation and bruising or bleeding more easily, such as longer bleeding from small cuts. The enteric coating is meant to reduce stomach irritation, but aspirin can still cause stomach ulcers and bleeding.
