What it is used for

This combination is used to treat high blood pressure, usually when one medicine alone has not controlled it well enough, or when a person already takes both medicines separately. Using one tablet instead of two can make treatment simpler. Both medicines also help prevent chest pain from angina, so doctors may use it for people who have both conditions.

How it works

Amlodipine relaxes and widens blood vessels by blocking calcium from entering the muscle in their walls. Atenolol is a beta blocker that slows the heart rate and reduces the force of each heartbeat, so the heart works less hard and blood pressure falls.

Important safety information

Common side effects

Common side effects include tiredness, dizziness, ankle swelling, cold hands and feet, headache, flushing and a slower heartbeat. Some people have disturbed sleep or stomach upset. These often improve as the body gets used to the medicine.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • People with asthma or other lung diseases that cause wheezing
  • People with a slow heartbeat, heart block or heart failure
  • People with diabetes, since beta blockers can hide the warning signs of low blood sugar
  • People with poor circulation in the hands or feet, or with kidney disease
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Anyone taking verapamil, diltiazem, other heart rhythm medicines or other blood pressure medicines

Warnings

  • Do not stop it suddenly; stopping a beta blocker abruptly can make angina worse or trigger a heart attack. Your doctor will reduce it gradually if needed.
  • Seek urgent help for fainting, a very slow pulse, severe breathlessness or new wheezing.
  • If you have diabetes, check your blood sugar more carefully, as a fast heartbeat may no longer warn you of a low sugar.
  • Tell any doctor or dentist treating you that you take a beta blocker, especially before surgery.

Questions people ask

Why is amlodipine combined with atenolol?

The two medicines lower blood pressure in different ways, so together they often work better than either alone. Having both in one tablet means fewer tablets to remember.

Can I stop taking it once my blood pressure is normal?

No, not without your doctor's advice. Normal readings usually mean the medicine is working. Stopping suddenly can make blood pressure rise again and, because of the beta blocker, may strain the heart.

Is amlodipine and atenolol safe if I have asthma?

Beta blockers such as atenolol can tighten the airways and are usually avoided in people with asthma. Tell your doctor if you have asthma or have ever had wheezing, so that a suitable medicine can be chosen.
