Sodium Chloride and Dextrose (IV fluid)
Intravenous fluid (salt and sugar solution)
- 27 brands
- 9 makers
- IV Infusion
- From ≈ ৳177
What it is used for
This fluid is given through a drip into a vein to replace water and salt and to provide a small amount of sugar for energy. It is used in people who cannot drink enough, for example with dehydration, repeated vomiting, or before, during and after surgery. Different mixtures contain different amounts of salt and sugar, and the doctor chooses the type and how much to give.
How it works
Sodium chloride (salt) and water top up the fluid in the blood and body tissues. Dextrose is a form of glucose that the body uses for energy, and once it is used, the remaining water helps hydrate the body.

Important safety information
Common side effects
Pain, redness or swelling can occur where the drip enters the vein. Giving too much or too quickly can overload the body with fluid, causing swelling or breathlessness, and can upset salt or blood sugar levels.
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first
- People with heart failure or kidney disease, who are at risk of fluid overload
- People with diabetes, as the dextrose can raise blood sugar
- People with liver disease or swelling from fluid retention
- Babies, children and older adults, whose fluid and salt balance needs close checking
- Anyone with high blood pressure or a past problem with salt balance in the blood
Warnings
- IV fluids should be given only by trained health workers who can monitor you. For mild dehydration from diarrhoea, oral rehydration salts by mouth are usually the right first treatment.
- Tell the nurse or doctor at once if you become breathless, your face or legs swell, or the drip site becomes painful or swollen.
- Mixtures with less salt can lower the blood sodium level, especially in children and after surgery, so doctors may check blood tests.
Questions people ask
Should I have a saline drip for weakness or tiredness?
No. IV fluids treat specific medical problems, such as dehydration when someone cannot drink enough. For most people who can drink, fluids by mouth are safer, and a drip without a clear reason carries risks such as infection and fluid overload.
What is the difference between normal saline and dextrose saline?
Normal saline contains salt and water only. Dextrose saline also contains dextrose (glucose), which provides some energy. Doctors choose between them depending on the person's needs and blood tests.
Is dextrose saline safe for people with diabetes?
It can be used, but the sugar in it can raise blood glucose. Doctors usually monitor blood sugar and may adjust diabetes treatment while it is given.
