What it is used for
Moxifloxacin tablets are used for some serious bacterial infections, including pneumonia caught in the community and certain skin, abdominal and pelvic infections. They are also used for sinus infections and flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, but regulators advise keeping them for cases where other antibiotics are unsuitable, because of the risk of serious side effects. Specialists sometimes use moxifloxacin as part of treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis.
How it works
Moxifloxacin blocks enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) that bacteria need to copy and repair their DNA, so the bacteria cannot multiply and die.

- People with epilepsy, myasthenia gravis, diabetes or liver disease
- Anyone who has an aortic aneurysm or a family history of one
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children and teenagers, in whom it is not usually used
- Anyone taking medicines that affect heart rhythm, such as some antipsychotics, antidepressants and heart rhythm medicines
Warnings
- Stop and contact your doctor if you get tendon pain or swelling (often in the heel), tingling or numbness, or unusual mood changes.
- Get emergency help for a fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or sudden severe pain in the chest, back or abdomen.
- Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium supplements can stop it being absorbed. Ask a pharmacist how to space them.
- Take it only when a doctor prescribes it and complete the course as directed; never share it or keep leftover tablets.
Questions people ask
What is the difference between moxifloxacin and levofloxacin?
Both are fluoroquinolone antibiotics with similar uses in chest infections and similar safety warnings. Levofloxacin is also used for some urinary infections, while moxifloxacin is not, because little of it reaches the urine. Your doctor chooses based on the infection.
Are moxifloxacin tablets the same as moxifloxacin eye drops?
They contain the same antibiotic, but the eye drops are used only for eye infections and act mostly on the eye. The tablets treat infections inside the body and carry more side effects.
Why are there warnings about tendons with this antibiotic?
Fluoroquinolones can rarely cause tendon inflammation or tears, sometimes even after the course has finished. The risk is higher in older adults and people taking steroids. Stop and tell your doctor if a tendon becomes painful.
