What it is used for

Levofloxacin is an antibiotic used for bacterial infections including pneumonia, sinus infections, flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, urinary tract and kidney infections, prostate infections and some skin infections. It is also part of treatment for drug-resistant tuberculosis under specialist care. Because of rare but serious side effects, it is usually kept for when other antibiotics are unsuitable.

How it works

Levofloxacin blocks enzymes that bacteria need to copy their DNA, so they cannot divide and they die. It reaches high levels in the lungs, which is one reason it is used for chest infections.
