What it is used for
Ketorolac is used for the short-term relief of moderate to severe pain, most often after surgery or an injury. It is not meant for mild pain or for long-term conditions such as arthritis. The injection is usually given in hospital, and tablets are sometimes used to continue treatment for a short time afterwards.
How it works
Ketorolac strongly blocks the COX enzymes that make prostaglandins, the chemicals that cause pain and inflammation. It is a strong painkiller but not an opioid, so it does not cause dependence.

Common side effects include stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Because it is strong, the risk of stomach bleeding and kidney problems is higher than with milder painkillers, which is why it is only used for a few days.

Warnings

- Get urgent help for black or bloody stools, vomiting blood, passing very little urine, or swelling of the face or throat.
- It is not suitable if dengue is suspected, as it can make bleeding more likely.
