What it is used for
This combination is used to ease pain and stiffness from osteoarthritis, the wear-and-tear arthritis that commonly affects the knees and hips. It works slowly and is taken over several weeks or longer, often alongside exercise, weight control and painkillers when needed. It is not meant for quick pain relief.
How it works
Diacerein blocks interleukin-1, a chemical that drives inflammation and the breakdown of joint cartilage. Glucosamine is a natural building block of cartilage, although evidence that supplements help is mixed.

Important safety information
Common side effects
Diacerein often causes loose stools or diarrhoea, stomach pain and a harmless darker yellow or brown colour of the urine. Glucosamine can cause stomach upset, heartburn or constipation. Rarely, diacerein affects the liver.
Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first
- People aged 65 or over, who are more likely to have severe diarrhoea
- People with liver disease
- People with inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome or other bowel problems
- Anyone allergic to shellfish, as glucosamine is often made from shellfish
- Anyone taking warfarin, laxatives or water tablets
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
Warnings
- Contact your doctor if diarrhoea develops. Severe diarrhoea can lead to dehydration and low potassium, and your doctor may advise stopping.
- Seek medical help for yellowing of the skin or eyes, pale stools, itching or pain in the upper right side of the abdomen, which can be signs of liver problems.
- It takes weeks to have an effect, so it will not relieve a sudden flare of pain.
