What it is used for

This combination is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia and low folate, especially during pregnancy, when the body needs more of both. Doctors also prescribe it after blood loss, for heavy periods, and when diet does not provide enough iron and folate.

How it works

Ferrous fumarate supplies iron, which the body uses to make haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying part of red blood cells. Folic acid is a B vitamin needed to make healthy new cells, including red blood cells and the growing baby's cells in pregnancy.

Tea, coffee, milk and antacids reduce iron absorption, so take it apart from them.
