What it is used for

This combination is used to prevent and treat iron deficiency anaemia, when the body does not have enough iron to make healthy red blood cells. It is commonly advised during pregnancy and breastfeeding, when the need for iron and folic acid rises, and for people whose diet is low in these nutrients. Zinc is included to help meet the body's needs for growth, immunity and healing when intake is poor.

How it works

Carbonyl iron is made of very fine particles of pure iron that dissolve slowly in the stomach, so iron is absorbed gradually and used to make haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying part of red blood cells. Folic acid helps the body make new red blood cells, and zinc is a mineral used by many of the body's enzymes.

Important safety information

Common side effects

Iron can cause stomach upset, nausea, constipation or loose stools, and it usually turns stools dark or black, which is harmless. Zinc can occasionally cause nausea or a metallic taste. Most people manage well, and following the pack or pharmacist's advice on how to take it may help with stomach symptoms.

Talk to a doctor or pharmacist first

  • People with thalassaemia, haemochromatosis or another condition that causes iron to build up in the body, or who have regular blood transfusions
  • Anyone with anaemia that has not been tested, because not every anaemia is caused by low iron
  • People with stomach ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease or other long-term gut problems
  • Anyone taking tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, thyroid medicine or antacids, as iron and zinc can reduce how well these are absorbed
  • Pregnant women who are already taking another iron or folic acid product

Warnings

  • Keep out of the reach of children. Swallowing too much iron is dangerous for young children; get urgent medical help if a child swallows any capsules.
  • Tea, coffee, milk and antacids can reduce how much iron is absorbed. Ask your pharmacist how to space them.
  • Dark stools are expected, but seek medical help if stools are black and sticky with stomach pain, or if you vomit blood.
  • Do not take more than one iron-containing product at the same time unless your doctor advises it.
